God Never Sleeps!

Judy Sheer Watters

Stanza IV

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

“God is not dead, nor does He sleep,

For Christ is here; His Spirit near

Brings peace on earth, good will to men.”

As a child, I never considered God being dead, but this question did rattle around in my head at times. With all that God had to do and all the people he had to watch, when did He sleep?

My sister, a mere teenager, was my Sunday School teacher when I was eight years old. At our small country church, our family heard consistent sermons of “be good and you will go to heaven.”

I remember my sister telling me that God was watching me at all times. Sometimes she changed up the names and said Jesus was watching me. I finally rested on my own logic that when God was tired, Jesus took over; when Jesus was rested, God came back on duty. I figured everyone else knew about this sleep cycle of Jesus and God so I never asked.

1 Corinthians 13:11 says: “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” (KJV)

The day I learned that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit were One, that “Christ is here; His Spirit near,” I knew I could fully rest in the loving, compassionate and comforting arms of my Savior and my Lord. Let the bells ring! God NEVER sleeps!
