December 7 Just Store-Bought Pastries?

…have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil… but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. I Peter 3:8 ESV

Donuts and pastries for breakfast are a rare treat pretty much reserved for Christmas mornings. On this day, the aroma of roasting turkey counts for protein, and gooey homemade bars and decorated sugar cookies trump eggs, hands down.

One Christmas morning, after staying up late with last minute wrapping, I woke to my husband’s gentle whisper. “It’s Christmas. Time to get up, Honey!” The store-bought pastries sat on the kitchen counter, ready to be pounced on, but I felt embarrassed. No homemade treats joined them.

“Babe, this was one of those years. I couldn’t find time to bake. I feel like a horrible wife and mother.”

Without hesitation this man spoke words all wives long to hear. “Hey, in case you didn’t notice, I didn’t marry you for your baking! Pies will arrive later. I love you. You are eye candy to me.”

Wow! I experienced a taste of God’s promise that a blessing would be obtained through our kindness and a tender heart! As I melted into his arms, morning breath and all, I knew this would be a good day.

Lord, Thank You for promising a blessing as we bless others – whether the baking gets done or not.
