An Unexpected Sound

Jenny Hargis

Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,

because He has come to His people and redeemed them.

Luke 1:68 (NIV)

The Gospel of Luke begins in the quiet home of a childless older couple, Zechariah and Elizabeth. A subtle melody commences as Zechariah travels to Jerusalem to serve with his priestly division. The music grows louder when Zechariah is named to enter the Temple. Once inside, the music crescendos to a fevered pitch as Zechariah comes face-to-face with the angel Gabriel, who calls Zechariah by name and tells him the Lord will answer his prayer! He and Elizabeth’s son John would prepare the people for the coming Messiah.

But instead of celebrating in harmony with the angel’s news, Zechariah voices doubt with an out-of-tune question. Gabriel sentences Zechariah to silence. A deafening silence. No ability to share his amazing encounter.

In due time, the angel’s words ring true as Elizabeth gives birth to a son. The fanfare of family and friends strikes a minor chord as they question Elizabeth’s name for the child. But when Zechariah writes, “His name is John,” his speech returns and he shouts a melody of praise! (Luke 1:68-79) Oh, that I would believe and not doubt when the Lord answers my prayer in His time!

Lord, open my ears to the answers You have for me.

Fill me with a melody of praise

as I hear the sounds of Christmas

and remember Your gift of redemption.
