The Unbroken Song

Judy Watters

Stanza II

I thought how, as the day had come,

The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled along th’ unbroken song

Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I admit I grew up in innocence. The 50s and 60s may have had its share of political unrest. Men came home from WWII not knowing how to handle their wives working in factories. The cold war set in.

I learned to hide under my desk at school in case a nuclear bomb should disintegrate our building. But I didn’t sense the fear; I thought it was fun! In my college days, students led sit-ins proclaiming “peace, not war” against the conflict in Vietnam. Even though I had classmates fighting on foreign soil, my life continued uninterrupted.

Fast-forward many years and the pattern of life on this earth has not changed much. We face national and political unrest every day. In this day of worldwide turmoil, we wonder if we will ever experience peace on earth.

It matters not what unrest happens in the world; the song of peace persists in the Word of God. Sing it daily. Meditate on it. This unbroken song of peace has sustained generations, and it can sustain you.

And suddenly there was with the angel

a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace, good will toward men…”

Luke 2:12-14 (KJV)
